I keep a variety of different books on the go - some act as journals to write down ideas and references, some are more like scrapbooks and others are purely for experimenting with designs and materials which I later refer to when I begin a new painting.

Highland SketchBook

In April 2023 I travelled up to the Highlands and these are the sketchbooks I kept of that trip.

Very fast sketches and mini paintings of the landscape made on bus and train journeys which included:

  • Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness

  • Fort William to Mallaig

  • Speyside steam railway to Broom Hill

Seawhite Eco sketchbooks, Derwent pencils of all types, charcoal and watercolour.

I adore travelling by train and have been a secret steam nerd since I was a kid..

Take a look through my mini Summer sketchbook…

Summer holidays are a difficult time to work with family responsibilities coming first, so I keep a toe-in by working in a small, moleskine sketchbook that I can take with me on my daily walks, using graphite, charcoal and a mini set of water colours to record the scenes we encounter.

Mini Inspo Journal

I like to make things just for myself - little things that I covet. This is a small Seawhite journal that I’ve filled with fragments of abstract paintings that I find visually very appealing. It could be a colour, or a brush mark, or design that I want to save in my book for inspiring future work. Or not.

See below for a video ‘flick-through’ of a mini inspo journal
